Marion Gibson Tanner, age 80 of Fayetteville, wife of Jack Lee Tanner, passed away on
March 26, 2026 at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston.
Born in Widen, WV, she was a daughter of the late Lovell and Gladys Gibson. Marion
was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and was very involved in her community
and in the lives of countless children. She was a graduate of Nicholas County High
School, Glenville State College, and served as an elementary and middle school
teacher for over 36 years. She was also a leading advocate of reading programs for
children and was heavily involved in the "Snuggle and Read" program for preschoolers.
Marion's advocacy for children included service on the Fayette Board of Education and
a leader in her Teacher's Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. Marion was a master gardener,
a member of the Eastern Star in Buckhannon, WV, and served as an Executive Director
of the Fayette County Democratic Party. She was a member of Fayetteville Baptist
Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jack, three sons: Brian (Sonya) Tanner of Elizabethton,
TN; Jeffrey (Beth) Tanner of Spencer, WV; and Matthew (Lynn) Tanner of Concord, NC;
Four grandchildren: Zane Tanner, Brock Tanner, Abbigail Tanner, and Olivia Tanner; a
step-grandson, Lucas Holzen, and a niece, Carol Ann Ramsey-Lucas (Kurt). She was
preceded in death by a half-sister, Ruth Ann Ramsey, and brother-in-law Cecil Ramsey.
Funeral services for Mrs. Marion Tanner will be held Thursday April 2nd at noon at
Fayetteville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Doc Adkins. The family will receive
friends from 5:00pm - 7:00pm Wednesday April 1 at New River Gorge Funeral Service,
350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville and at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Burial
will follow the funeral in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fayetteville Baptist Church Scholarship
Fund, 104 Ankrom St., Fayetteville, WV.
