Jill Hudson

Jill Hudson, born June 28, 1957, in Charleston, West Virginia, passed away on March 4, 2026, after a short but courageous fight with cancer. She was the beloved daughter of the late David and Betty Steinmetz. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Jill leaves behind a legacy defined by compassion, service, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Jill earned her Master of Social Work and dedicated her life to caring for people in their most difficult moments. She found what she often considered her calling, serving the men and women who served our country.

Jill cared deeply for the veterans she worked with at the Beckley VA. She approached her work with fierce compassion, determination, and an open heart, advocating tirelessly for those who carried the invisible wounds of service. To many veterans, she was more than a social worker; she was a trusted friend, a steady presence, and a source of hope when they needed it most. Her impact on their lives was profound, and her dedication to their wellbeing will not be forgotten.

Outside of her professional life, Jill was a talented and creative soul. She loved to draw, paint, woodburn, and express herself through art. She played both piano and guitar, filling her home and the lives of those around her with creativity and warmth.

Jill is survived by her loving husband, Roger Hudson, and four children: Lisa Hostutler (Joel), Laura Browning (Lance), Zachary Hudson (Beth), and Jessica Colvard. She is also survived by her brother Jon Steinmetz (Betty); sisters Judy Williams (Danny, late) and Jane Davis (Jim); and her nephews Matt (Mary Claire), Chris (Jill), and Ben Davis.

Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and spoiled generously: Ellis, Isaac, Elsie, Adam, Harper, Beauden, Olivia, and Sydney. They brought endless pride and happiness to her life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 28th from 1-5 PM at Smokey's on the Gorge (219 Chestnutburg Rd, Lansing, WV 25862).

In lieu of flowers, Jill's family will be collecting donations in her memory to support Patriot Guardens, a local organization that provides hands-on agricultural education for veterans, active-duty military members, and their families, or another similar cause that serves veterans. Donations can be brought to the Celebration of Life or sent to her daughter Laura Jane Browning via Venmo (@ljbrowning05) or paypal (ljbrowning05@gmail.com).

Jill will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, and the deep compassion she had for her family, her beloved animals, and nature. Her compassion changed lives, and the love she gave will continue to live on through all those she touched.
