John B Arritt

John B. Arritt, age 77 of Fayetteville, husband of Cathy Arritt, passed away on July 14, 2026 at home surrounded by his family and friends.

Born in Charleston, WV, John was the son of the late Fletcher Marion Arritt and Sarah Ballard Arritt. He was a 1967 graduate of Fayetteville High School and a 1972 graduate of Marshall University. John grew up on football fields, basketball courts and running tracks learning, step by step, from his father, Fletcher Arritt.

John started coaching in the fall of 1972 and ended his coaching career in 2006. Throughout the years he served as Fayetteville High School Assistant Football Coach, Fayetteville Middle School Football, Basketball, and Track Coach. He won over 100 Fayetteville Middle School football games, 150 basketball games and over thirty years of coaching track won 25 Fayette County Conference Championships, boys and girls. He directed over 200 Middle School Track and Field Events for Southern WV. John was honored to be the West Virginia Junior High Coach of the Year in 1996-1997 along with many other accolades. To him, it didn’t matter if you were any good, it only mattered that you went out. He always felt lucky that he "had a lot of good kids with good parents."

John also served his community as a proud member of the Fayetteville Lion's Club and was a very patriotic man who often encouraged his students to " Do it for America."

Survivors include his beloved wife Cathy; two daughters: Kate Arritt and Mary Arritt (Aaron Frankenfield) both of Fayetteville; three grandchildren: John, Ian, and Lily Ong; "Country Cousin" Carolyn Arritt, many nieces and nephews and a host of faithful lifelong friends. John was preceded in death by his brothers, Fletcher Arritt, Jr.  and David Arritt.

Funeral services for John B. Arritt will be conducted Friday July 17, 2026 at 2:00 pm at the Fayette County Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, 200 W. Maple Avenue, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Memorial Building.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fayetteville Lion's Club, Treasurer Wayne Yonkelowitz, 62 Stokes Lane, Fayetteville, WV 25840.
