Freda Martin Akers, age 86, of Fayetteville passed away on January 3, 2026. Born July 14, 1939 in Kaymoor, WV, she was a daughter of the late Verna Swanigan Martin and Tracy “Kutch” Martin. She was a 1957 graduate of Fayetteville High School, Marshall University in 1961, and earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Arkansas (MS). Mrs. Akers taught school for 40 years, which included several Department of Defense schools, 14 years at Fayetteville Middle School, and 10 years at Fayetteville Elementary School, from which she retired.
She was a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church and the Fayetteville Women’s Club where she served three terms as President of that organization.
Preceded in death by her parents Verna and Kutch Martin, sisters Faye Prater and Linda Zimmerman and brothers Tom Martin, Kutch Martin and Ted Martin
Survivors include her husband of 64 years Jimmy Akers, sons James “Marty” Akers (Traci), and Alan Akers; a daughter Kathy Akers Coleman (George), grandchildren Lindsay Coleman Daugherty, Jason Coleman, Ethan Akers and two great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Rosalie Powell of Gallipolis, OH.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Freda Akers will be conducted Saturday January 10, 2026, at 1:00pm at Fayetteville Baptist Church by Pastor Jack Eades. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow at Huse Memorial Park and Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Fayetteville Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 104 Ankrom St., Fayetteville, WV 25840.
