Clayton "Joey" Wheeler

Clayton Joel "Joey" Wheeler, age 78, of Oak Hill, passed away on July 1, 2026 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. Born in Oak Hill on May 30, 1948, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Wheeler and Lola Conley Wheeler. 

Mr. Wheeler proudly served in the federal government for 34 years and retired as Chief of Prosthetics at the Beckley VA Medical Center. He was very proud of the support he provided to veterans. Joey was a practical joker who enjoyed life to the fullest.

Survivors include his son, Matt Wheeler (Sarah) of Fayetteville as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 41 years, Gail Frances Wheeler and brothers Tommy, Gary, and Larry Wheeler.

Funeral Services for Joey Wheeler will be conducted in the chapel of New River Gorge Funeral Service, 350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11:00 am by T.J. Salango.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday July 10 from  7:00 - 9:00 pm. Burial will follow the funeral service at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
