Charles Mahan Mahood

Charles Mahan "Charlie" Mahood, born October 24, 1949, a lifelong resident of Fayetteville, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 27, 2026, following a long illness.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Wade Hampton Mahood Jr. and Vivian Katherine Mahan Mahood; his sister, Kerr Crosby; his brother, Wade Hampton Mahood III; and his late wife, Emily Mahood.

He leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Sheila Mahood; his son, David Jarrell, and his wife, Corey, of Naples, Florida; and his special niece, Lane Mahood and her husband Garrett, of Orlando, Florida.

When Charlie married Sheila, he embraced her five children and their children as his own; Teddy Ryan Edwards of St Augustine Florida; Jeremy Edwards of St Augustine, Florida; Jeff Edwards of Fayetteville, West Virginia; Dana Phillips of Asheville, North Carolina and Sarah Roehrig of Concord, North Carolina. Grandchildren: Ivy Browning, Seth Edwards, Parke Edwards, Luke Edwards, Penelope Edwards, Olivia Edwards, Maya Edwards, Noah Phillips and Tosh Phillips. They brought him great joy, and he treasured being a part of their birthdays, graduations, holidays, and family gatherings throughout the years.

Charlie graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy in 1968 and later graduated from West Virginia University. He went on to have a career with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources as a Wildlife Biologist, a fitting path for someone with such a deep knowledge and appreciation of the natural world. Charlie seemed to know something about every tree, plant, and animal around him, and he enjoyed sharing that knowledge with others.

His connection to the outdoors extended to the New River. In the early days of commercial whitewater rafting in the New River Gorge, Charlie worked as a river guide for Class VI, becoming part of a special era (think cut off jeans era) of the river and the Fayetteville community.

Charlie was also a master woodworker and a talented craftsman. His work and creativity can still be seen around Fayetteville. He helped build the Thirsty Oak, the establishment now known as Charlie's Pub, leaving behind another small piece of his handiwork in the town he called home throughout his life. He also served for many years on the Board of Directors of Fayette County National Bank.

Those who knew Charlie will remember his quick wit, his sense of humor, his remarkable knowledge, and the stories and laughter that came with spending time in his company.

In accordance with Charlie's wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Charlie's memory are encouraged to make a donation to the Fayette County Animal Shelter, a tribute to his lifelong love for animals.
